ABOUT CEAL

CEAL (Centre for Enthusiasts of Asian Languages) is an independent platform for the study, preservation, and dissemination of Asian languages and cultures.

The centre brings together language education, artistic research, and community-based scholarship, with a particular focus on minority and underrepresented languages. Drawing on perspectives from fan studies and participatory culture, CEAL fosters spaces for friendship and inspiration, where learning is both intellectually grounded and socially meaningful.

Current activities include Japanese language education, study groups in Korean, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia, as well as creative and artistic workshops. CEAL develops interdisciplinary projects that connect language learning with music, arts and crafts, food practices, and embodied knowledge. Particular attention is given to minority and underrepresented languages, including Ainu, Fuzhounese, and Buryat.

In addition, CEAL explores playful and intergenerational approaches to language and culture through activities such as mahjong gatherings, language-based games, and the development of original educational game formats. Retro gaming events, often organised in community centres, bring together different generations through shared cultural experiences.

CEAL is strongly embedded in the city of Utrecht and actively engaged in community outreach. Through collaborations with local partners, the centre contributes to cultural and social initiatives, including origami workshops in hospitals, sushi-making events for vulnerable communities, sumi-e painting sessions for individuals with mental health challenges, and musical performances in care homes. These activities reflect CEAL’s commitment to making language and culture accessible and meaningful across diverse social contexts.

As an umbrella platform, CEAL brings together a range of initiatives, including Japan Fans, Korea Fans, China Fans, and Bahasa Indonesia Fans, creating a broader framework for collaboration and growth while building on existing communities.

Through its courses, workshops, publications, and collaborations, CEAL contributes to the preservation of linguistic diversity and the development of new forms of public scholarship beyond traditional academic institutions.
