Music & Recordings

Members explore a wide spectrum of musical traditions from across East and Southeast Asia, ranging from classical court repertoires and regional folk styles to contemporary experimental and popular forms. This engagement often leads to creative collaborations, research-driven performances, and new interpretations that bridge scholarship and artistry.

From time to time, these explorations culminate in concerts, lecture-performances, and small recorded editions. Some projects grow out of archival work; others emerge from artistic research, linguistic studies, or cross-cultural workshops held within the CEAL network. These recordings reflect both the depth of our study and the joy of discovering new sound worlds.

Alongside our live activities, CEAL also supports a number of small, independent recording projects created within the community. These editions are crafted with care and reflect the research pathways of our members.

Selene & Martine are currently working on a series of Japanese children’s songs, recorded in a gentle, acoustic style that highlights both linguistic nuance and cultural context. The project brings together musicality, pedagogy, and cross-cultural storytelling, making the songs accessible to learners and listeners alike.

Martine has also produced a dedicated album featuring Japanese music inspired by birds. This recording draws on classical, folk, and neo-traditional sources, offering a contemplative sound world shaped by her artistic research. Each track engages with motifs of flight, rhythm, and natural imagery, echoing long-standing themes in Japanese musical aesthetics.
